Of Elves & Dwarves

The word “elf” used to conjure images of a leaf-clad, butterfly-winged diminutive creature… or one of Santa’s helpers. Eww.

Tolkien’s genius and Jackson’s respect for it completely recreated Western culture’s understanding of Elves, and now most people that have seen LOTR actually revere Elves. They are the ultimate angelic embodiment: Immortal, wisest, and fairest of all beings. At this reinvention I rejoice.
And with “The Hobbit” movie, Peter Jackson is about to refurbish the Dwarves’ reputation from the petty Snow White dwarves to the tough and proud (though displaced) craftsmen they are in Tolkien’s legendarium.
Thank God for JRR Tolkien and Peter Jackson.
